He was the weakest reading since June, the Commerce Department said Monday spending and two tepid gains followed in October and November.

However, economists were cautiously optimistic that rising wages labour markets continue to improve supported demand.

“I think there’s some underlying trend gives us reason to feel a little better about spending what brings the future and the main reason is the labour market,” said Anthony Karydakis, Chief Economist at Commerzbank in New York.

United States economic growth accelerated in the fourth quarter, but to soften and hiring picked up activity at the beginning of this year is expected. The President of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke said last week that the central bank was considering a further relaxation of monetary policy to sustain growth.

Economists had expected consumption, which represents more than two-thirds of economic activity in the United States moving to 0.1%, the same as in October and November.
