A new report shows alarming trends in the adult and childhood obesity among the inhabitants of Indiana. The report of the Indiana University Center for Evaluation and Education Policy says that the United States is the sixth highest in the world by percentage of the population considered overweight.

The report of the co-author Terry Spradlin says Indiana’s numbers are not much better. The state is 15 in the nation when it comes to adults who are overweight and 27 in the nation for childhood obesity.

Spradlin says there is also an economic impact in the U.S. spends about $ 150 billion in healthcare related to obesity. Spradlin says that breakfast is one way schools can help curb obesity in children served.

“In schools that play a role by the National Food Program, where breakfast programs available for low income children, at least, care for children have access to a healthy meal to start the day,” said Spradlin.
